Elizabeth Beale (Demetriades), MD, MRCP (UK) Dip ABLM is Clinical Director of the Roybal Diabetes Management Program in East Los Angeles and Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. She trained as an internist and endocrinologist in South Africa in the 1980s towards the end of the apartheid era. She moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s at the height of the AIDs epidemic where she retrained in internal medicine and endocrinology at LAC+USC Medical Center. She became a faculty member in the Division of Endocrinology in 2005 with a research and clinical focus on type 2 diabetes. Over the years it became apparent that lifestyle factors are the main drivers of type 2 diabetes and related chronic metabolic disorders. Furthermore, the standard pharmacological treatment is very difficult to implement, very expensive, often ineffective and contributes to the stress in patients’ lives, and burnout in clinicians. In May 2019 she attended her first lifestyle medicine conference at Harvard College as a birthday treat to herself. She had at last “found her tribe”. She immediately joined the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and in November 2019 became a diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She is determined to share her new knowledge regarding lifestyle medicine with her colleagues and patients. COVID-19 provided an opportunity to start a 4 week virtual culinary medicine elective course at Keck School of Medicine at USC and to work with many wonderful like-minded colleagues and thoughtful and enthusiastic 3rd and 4th year medical students.
